Ballscrew FAQ:
Q. What's the advantage of a double nut over a preloaded single nut?
A. The two chief advantages are: 1) The preload is adjustable from light to heavy with a double nut set-up and 2) Over time, wear is likely to occur producing backlash. This can be adjusted out with a double nut whereas a preloaded single nut would have to have the balls replaced.
Q. How much backlash does a standard single nut assembly have?
A. From .001-.004 typically. The variance is due to fluctuation in both the ballnut ID and the ballscrew OD.
Q. There's a kind of crunching going on in my preloaded ballnut assembly. What's wrong?
A. Probably nothing. It's not uncommon for the balls to clutter a bit while passing through the return tube. As long as the elements roll and do not skid, you should be okay.
Q. I have felt zero backlash ballnuts turn on the screw before and they were silky smooth. Your unit is not as smooth, why?
A. There will always be a noticeable difference in feel between a ground ballscrew and a rolled ballscrew. Precision rolled ballscrews when preloaded are not as smooth but are a fraction of the cost.
